Hiking Tour Essentials: The Gear You Can't Hit The Trails Without

Hiking in Alaska

Hiking in Alaska is a unique experience — you get to enjoy stunning landscapes, amazing wildlife, and sometimes incredible natural light shows. It’s not all easy, though — you also need to prepare for unpredictable weather, remote and rugged terrain, and the unique challenges of the Alaskan wilderness. Here is some of the gear we recommend having to ensure you’re ready for whatever Alaska throws your way.

Appropriate Footwear

Any hiker knows that the right footwear is essential. You need durable, waterproof hiking boots that are able to maintain their grip on slippery and uneven surfaces. You’ll be dealing with rocky paths, as well as potentially snow, ice, and mud, so you want something with great traction and really good ankle support. You can also bring a pair of sandals, which can come in handy when crossing streams or even when you’re just giving your feet a break.

Layered Clothing

When most people think of Alaska, they think “cold”. While that isn’t wrong, the weather here can change pretty quickly, so layering your clothes is the best way to go.

The first layer should be a thin moisture-wicking layer — even though it may be cold, you’re going to be exerting yourself so you will likely be sweating, and you don’t want that wetness sitting against your skin for hours. You should also have some insulating layers, preferably using some fleece or down, and a water- and wind-proof outer layer. Also be sure to include a hat, water resistant gloves, and thermal socks.

Navigation Tools

Whether you’re going down a well-marked trail or striking out into the unknown, having navigational tools is a must, as it is easy to get lost out here. We recommend having a detailed map of the area you’ll be in, as well as a compass and GPS device that you know how to use. If you’re going to be really remote, consider a satellite phone or personal locator beacon for emergencies.

Food and First Aid

Make sure you bring enough food with you — and perhaps a little extra. You want non-perishable foods that give you plenty of energy, like nuts, dried fruit, and protein bars. Staying hydrated is also essential, so carry a water bottle or hydration system. You may also consider investing in a water filter or water purification tablets in case you run out of water on the tail.

When it comes to first aid, you always hope you won’t need it but are grateful you have it when you do. Keep a well-stocked first aid kit with you. You should be prepared for cuts, blisters, sprays, and burns if you will be camping. You should also be sure to bring any personal medications you may need, even if you don’t take them on a daily basis.

Prepare for the Unexpected

Of course we always hope our hikes will go smoothly, but it is best to be prepared. Because some of Alaska’s hikes are so remote, we recommend packing the following items:

  • Emergency blankets

  • Whistle

  • Bear spray

  • Multi-tool

  • Duct tape

  • Spare shoelaces

  • Sewing kit

Protect Yourself

Whether we’re talking about protecting yourself from the wildlife or the elements, there’s plenty to keep in mind. Stock up on insect repellent and sunscreen, as forgetting either can make for an uncomfortable hike. Alaska is also bear country, so invest in bear-proof containers or a bear bag that you can hang out of reach.

Extra Essentials

While Alaska is known as the land of the midnight sun, that also means on the other side of the coin there are some long nighttime hours to get through. We recommend bringing flashlights and headlamps, along with extra batteries.

You’ll also want to make sure you have hand sanitizer, toilet paper, and a quick-dry towel. Also be sure to bring a waste bag so you can leave no trace!
